Sergeant Greene was succumbed to a gunshot wound received five years earlier while he and his partner investigated a burglary at the service station on Ft. Story, Virginia. The two officers were driving past the service station, located at Atlantic Avenue and 12th Street, at approximately 0345 hours when they observed suspicious activity. As they approached the building two suspects came running out and opened fire, striking Sergeant Greene in the head and wounding his partner.

Sergeant Greene was taken a local hospital and then transferred to the Salisbury, North Carolina, Veterans Affairs Hospital. He remained unconscious and on a respirator until his death. The two suspects fled the scene and the case remains unsolved.

Sergeant Greene was a Vietnam War veteran and had returned from combat only four months before the incident. He was assigned to the 222nd Military Police Detachment. He had been in the military for one year.

He was survived by his parents, four brothers, and three sisters.

Next Saturday, May 10, nearly

100 local, state, and federal

law enforcement officers will

embark upon a 250-mile bicycle journey

from Chesapeake, VA, to the National

Law Enforcement Officers

Memorial (NLEOM) in Washington,

DC. The officers are members of the

Policy Unity Tour, an organization established

to raise monetary support for

and awareness of the Memorial. The

officers come together and make the

annual ride to honor their colleagues

that have been killed in the line of

duty.

Although this is only the third year

for the Virginia contingent, the participating

officers will be delivering a

check payable to the NLEOM Fund for

$100,000, bringing the Chapter’s combined

three-year total to $185,000, and

the Police Unity Tour National’s to

nearly one million dollars.

The 2003 event begins with a

"Send-Off Ceremony" at 7:00AM at

the Virginia State Police Division V

Headquarters, 1557 South Military

Highway, in Chesapeake. Delegate

Robert McDonnell will be there to

present the officers with a copy of Joint

House Resolution No. 915, commending

the Police Unity Tour effort. Lieutenant

Colonel Don Carter, the Provost

Marshal at Ft. Eustis, which oversees

the Ft. Story Military Police Unit in Virginia

Beach, will be the keynote

speaker. Carter is expected to address

the officers riding in honor of Sergeant

Frederick Dale Greene, a Fort Story

Military Police Officer killed in the line

of duty as a result of an incident that occurred

on the fort more than 33 years

ago. Greene will finally be recognized

for his service and sacrifice to his country

when his name is engraved into the

marble walls of the National Law Enforcement

Officers Memorial and announced,

as a tradition, at the annual

Candlelight Vigil Ceremony Tuesday,

May 13, 8:00PM.

At 8:00AM, the officers will begin

pedaling for Washington. The route

will take them through Portsmouth,

Suffolk, Smithfield, and across the

James River on the ferry. Continuing

through Williamsburg, the officers will

arrive in Richmond on Saturday

evening. On Sunday morning, the officers

will pedal to the State Capitol,

then north on Route 1 to Fredericksburg,

where they will stop for the

night. Monday, the officers will continue

the ride and meet at the Lincoln

Memorial with some 350 other members

riding in from Indiana, New York,

and New Jersey. Officers will finish

the trek to the National Law Enforcement

Officers Memorial with an anticipated

arrival time of 2:00PM.

PRAYER FOR POLICE OFFICERS

A Police Officer's Prayer

Lord, I ask for courage --
Courage to face and conquer my own fears...
Courage to take me where others will not go...
I ask for strength --
Strength of body to protect others,
and strength of spirit to lead others...
I ask for dedication --
Dedication to my job, to do it well,
Dedication to my community, to keep it safe...
And please, Lord, through it all, be by my side.
